This position is located within the Facilities Management Service at the VA Sierra Nevada Healthcare System, in Reno, NV. Incumbent acts as the general foreman for in house construction projects and major repairs performed under Construction Crew Authority throughout the facility as assigned. As such, incumbent is responsible to assign work, set work pace, conduct take-offs from drawings to develop procurement lists, research materials/suppliers for unique applications, and perform other related tasks as necessary to successfully manage this construction program. Incumbent is considered to be a working foreman and is expected to assist with work in all trades supervised. Incumbent is expected to coordinate utility shutdowns for assigned projects with facility maintenance staff as well as affected hospital staff. Incumbent provides input when requested regarding project personnel selection.
Major Duties include:
- Developing work standards, methods, and procedures as necessary using established National Codes, trade work practices, and VA standards and specifications as guidelines.
- Responsible for performance of assigned construction personnel, both in quality and quantity.
- Makes works assignments and explains to subordinates the work to be accomplished, sequence and priority of work, and interpretation of the plans and specifications.
- Makes adjustments in layout or procedure to eliminate slowdowns or stoppage of work.
- Checks on jobs in progress and initiates corrective measures where there are discrepancies.
- Motivates subordinates to operate as an effective working unit;
- Trains new associates in methods and procedures; assures safe working conditions within the unit making sure safeguards are used in handling tools and materials, and in operation of power equipment;
- Assures that good housekeeping practices are observed in all work areas.
Works with VA staff in charge of the area where the work is to be accomplished to minimize disruptions and delays.
Coordinates and cooperates with other supervisors, work leads and project managers, in particular the of O&M; and Projects sections, to avoid conflicting schedules between departments.
Advises the Chief of O&M; as to status of work and needed adjustments in the schedule.
